About
We are three musicians who improvise music and words. It’s influenced by post punk, no-wave and various stuff like that, and we’re also quite influenced by what we see and hear in the Hobart DIY music community. That said, it’s definitely on the experimental side of things and our performances will often incorporate the visual and theatrical.
We wanted to do something spontaneous with our music and link it to the visual, as we all have backgrounds in art. Being influenced and inspired by impov/experimental music in Hobart, we wanted the energy and dissonance that can come from being on the edge of falling apart. We wanted to exploit the trust and connection of having played together for so long – and to challenge ourselves a bit.
Maria somehow comes up with words, plucking poetry from the atmosphere. She also brings most of the performative art elements with handmade masks, chalk drawings and other visual incarnations. Michael provides a driving energy and rhythmic backbone with his unique and nuanced approach to the drums. Duncan adds droning background on basic synth modules, and then uses guitar and violin to create some kind of melodic/chordal scaffolding with twists and turns and jagged edges.
The local scene has been very supportive of out antics. We’ve managed to be a part of MOFO and Dark MOFO; the AH UM Experimental Music, Jazz and Art Festival; and the Huon Valley Festival, along with playing in various venues in Hobart and Melbourne.
